Graduation Dress

Project Process & Purpose

For my final day in fifth grade, I had decided to create my own dress to wear to my promotion. A few weeks before the event I gathered together my supplies and got to work. First, starting with a fitted mannequin, wrapping myself in plastic wrap and duct tape to create a mannequin that was perfectly sized to me. That way I could work on the dress without it being directly on me.

The fabric itself was a comfortable, fun patterned skirt originally. Provided by my mom. Since half the sewing was already done I could simply sew straps and a belt onto it. Even with this easy process I still had to hem the top to fit me more adequately which was a challenge of itself.

Once the dress was completely finished I could wear it comfortably and celebrate my upcoming end of the school year whilst wearing my own work!

The material

This dress and its whole idea started with my mother giving me a lemon printed skirt she had gotten for free. This old skirt was the entire base to my dress, and I’m very happy with how it turned out for such a finicky stretching fabric. The straps and belt are made from an old long sleeve shirt I had outgrown and took apart to use as fabric. Taking pieces that could no longer be worn and putting them together to make something renewed.
